The waves continue, anger, sadness, anger
Momentarily imperceptible but lingering stabs of pain
It hurts all over, under, inside, around
We bend so far our backs almost break
We negotiate with pain till it’s all too much to bear
We raise our heads just a little but even that is too much
The wickedness of the wicked seeks to suppress
Cutting off raised heads, reminding us of “our place”
BUT we have a voice, we’ve heard it, the loud rumble of unity…

We all watched in awe; the silence of the Commander-In-Chief echoed through our television sets as he adeptly failed to address the humongous elephant standing in the center of the room. It felt as though the cumulative incidences we witnessed and experienced were just figments of our imagination.

The forces in control of the greatest black nation on earth have deemed it fit that you be alive to witness yet another exercise in tomfoolery otherwise known as a Nigerian election. You should be grateful to these kind and benevolent forces who could have easily crowned anyone they wanted as your new president, governor, or legislator, but instead decided to grant you a chance to be "part of the process".
Cry Me A River
Even now, three years since they started, I don’t even refer to it as depression. To me, it’s just that thing that happens. Calling it depression seems strange on my tongue, like I’m appropriating someone else’s struggle. But then, I won’t see a medical professional to get diagnosed, so it’s this vicious catch 22 of self-loathing.

Whereas the army may tear you to pieces to put you back together again, I learned the hard way that Covenant University just did the first part and called it a day. “Covenant is the best university in Nigeria,” is something I heard a lot from my father that year, along with their accolades and accomplishments as an institution.
