Roots

When they ask you to control your hair
To deny its right to be tangled and wild
And style it to be as subservient as you
Remember you have roots you have not watered

When they ask you to wear a suit
In the heat of the blazing Motherland sun
And strangle yourself with colourful rope
Remember you have roots you have not watered

When they ask you to eat with a fork and a knife
Food that was beaten into shape and moulded by hands
And to sip tea from a cup far too small for your appetite
Remember you have roots you have not watered

When they ask you to speak as they do
To sound as though your nose was pinched
And shun the melody of your mother tongue
Remember you have roots you have not watered

Let your hair be wild and free
Your skin, draped in fabrics the many colours of the earth
Your food, moulded by your hand and served to size
Your speech, seasoned with the tunes of your mother tongue
Then you will remember your roots to be watered
